Equal Rights
so im a little tired of the gay marriage argument. i think the whole thing is being presented wrong. instead of constantly banging the drum on a gay peoples right to marriage, why dont we start talking about what its really about: equal rights. to be completely honest, i could care less if gay people want to get married or not. it doesnt really affect me in a way where i feel like i need to stand up and defend the right to something i dont even view as that important. i dont have a super favorable view of marriage, and im sure im not alone. so this sanctity of marriage argument is stale and old. but, if we can start talking about the real problem, the lack of equal rights to every citizen, then maybe the conversation can make a shift towards actually achieving a result in more than a handful of small states.
the problem is that the term "gay marriage" frames the issue as something only gay people want. you get religious people, and people just wound too tight with this image of dudes getting married in ass-less chaps or something, and thats the problem. people underestimate the power of words and how they are used to make a point. gay marriage is the gay communities fight, but equal rights is a fight we should all defend. people wanting to fight gay marriage can twist words and scare people about what a "gay agenda" might entail. but i personally feel that if the language used in gay marriage debate can be shifted away from the marriage talk, and pushed towards why exactly it is unfair to discriminate against a certain group for being different, then maybe people will wake up and realize this is no different then racism, only framed differently. its discrimination and a suppression of rights towards a group based strictly on their sexual orientation. im sure there are many many perverts in the world that get off on some very strange shit, but nobody is saying they cannot marry whomever they want. there is no difference in gay people with the exception of what they find attractive in other people. they still eat, sleep, and shit like the rest of us. if this is a free country, why is it only you get an all access VIP if youre a straight person? if we are all created equal, this group of people should not be viewed as inferior. it should not be up to religious groups or the government to decide and discriminate against their rights and treat them differently based on personal beliefs. how i was raised and where i come from have molded my outlook on many things, good and bad, but i am fully aware that these ideas and opinions only carry so much water. they belong to me, and in no way to i feel like where im from is the perfect model for the entire country to follow. so people need to get off their moral high ground and stop pretending they have the answer to happiness for everyone and start looking in the mirror on this issue. start thinking about how you would feel if the law forbid you from marrying the girl or guy of your dreams, simply because they are white, black, mexican, asian, whatever. its no different then whats happening to gay people right now.
