this blog sort of jumps around, but i like most of its content...
i think as the presidential race unfolds its becoming clear that the race divide in this country is still very present. there is also a great divide in this country when it comes to who has money and who does not. the rich people seem to think all is well with our economy and we are still a strong nation. maybe for those with a couple million in the bank, it probably would be hard to understand the basic needs of the everyday american.
i feel that john mccain is a guy that represents so many things that are wrong with our country right now. he is rich, old, son of a military big wig, a former military big wig himself, and white. we is the sort of guy that owns 7 homes and has $100 million in the bank, but wants to run a country where only about 2% of the population can even begin to relate to his way of living. and also a country that is feeling very pinched in the wallet, due in large part to his party’s hot streak of bad economic policies. what does john mccain really have to offer us americans? the republican spin machine sure paints barrack obama as an elitist, but barrack obama was not born into a prominent family with the silver spoon fixed nicely in his mouth. barrack obama achieved success through opportunity. opportunity that all of us as americans have, but so few of us actually seek out and reap the benefits of. he is self made, and its frustrating that the idea of “earned” money is somehow viewed as a negative, but always having money, and then marrying into more of it somehow is not. why is that? is it cause john mccain is the original maverick? is it because he was a p.o.w.? i don’t really think so. i think the real truth is that john mccain is white, and barrack obama is black. a self made white man is someone to be respected, but a self made black guy is too uppity and should go back to where he belongs, with the rest of them. this is not my view, but that of the republican party (whether they admit it or not) and it’s the sort of bullshit the media is willingly (or unwillingly) putting out there for all of us to see and hear. the sad part is that so many “white” people in this country really buy into it. they swallow it up and don’t even realize that the republican party and private organizations that profit from war and oil are the ones feeding them this propaganda.
do we as a nation really want to vote for 4 more years of war first, diplomacy later? 4 more years of bad policies that are causing our nation to deteriorate, while china and russia become too strong (thanks to oil prices and cheap labor) for us to control? or do we want to be a nation that that leads by being the best and making sure the rest of the world is playing fair? shouldn't we be a country that leads the world in all things cool? things like science, medicine, space travel, new technology, renewable fuel, and in the process, once again establish ourselves as THE leader of the free world?
Its also in the news about how john mccain was asked about the economy, and is response was that according to his advisers, things are going pretty well and the economy is strong. huh? It probably is pretty strong if you invest mucho deniro into oil and defense companies. i’m sure those companies are cash cows for anyone with enough cash in the bank to actually invest in them. Under republican rule for the last 8 years, the rich in this country just keep on getting richer, and everyone else just has to keep cutting corners with money in order to pad the pockets of the fat cats. how is it george bush can have the lowest approval rating of all time, but can still rake in millions of dollars for the republican party? its because the top dogs of the republican party have no interest in whats best for the country. they are only interested in staying rich, getting richer, and making sure they stay as kings of the society mountain. they see the democratic party as a threat to their way of living. democrats want to raise taxes! that’s what they keep saying. now, im not exactly an expert on the economy, but it seems like common sense that the money to fund these wars has to come from somewhere. so the bush administration cuts taxes for the rich and big corporations, and borrows money from the world (mostly china) to fund our wars. let’s get into debt with china so we can one day play by their rules, lets give big business incentive to produce more product that the american people can no longer afford to buy, and lets continue to spend billions on wars for oil instead of investing billions in renewable energy. does anyone really believe that the $500 billion and counting couldn’t have been invested on inventing better technology and fuels that don’t come from countries that hate us? couldn't $500 billion dollars been spent in THIS country? that sort of money could make health care free for everyone, improve schools, improve hospitals, wipe out homelessness, fund NASA, fund renewable energy, etc. the list is long for what could have been, but unfortunately the republican party has scared a large part of the country into believing that the terrorist are out there, and we need to stick by them if we want to be safe. fuck that!
ok, so my point sort of went in a random direction there, but i was going to talk about taxes. to me it makes sense to raise taxes. democrats are going to have to raise taxes because the republican party has balanced the budget like a teenager with a new mastercard. They are going to be forced to make choices to fix serious problems in this country, and of course there is going to be backlash from the right for doing so. but raising taxes is inevitable, so as americans, we should accept that as citizen of this country we have a certain obligation to doing our part to make the country a better place to live, and to also make our country a self reliant one that leads the world in all things important, not just military. people talk about taxes like they are the this terrible thing, but the truth of it is that without taxes we don’t have city streets, parks, police departments, fire departments, public schools, welfare programs, a military, etc. they are a necessary part of a democratic society. paying taxes makes you an equal part of this country, and gives you the right to speak out against our government when you don’t feel like they are handling the money that you give them properly.
that said, rich people live by a different set of rules. if you’re really rich you can just send your money to an offshore bank and avoid paying any taxes. so a guy making 50k a year pays taxes, but the guy making 100 million a year can send his mega-bucks to an island and not pay anything? How is that fair to the rest of us?
